Jan. 15--WENDOVER, Nev.--Apparently, sometimes the house does lose.
Officials from the family-owned State Line Silver Smith Casino Resorts said Monday the casino group filed Jan. 10 for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. A federal bankruptcy court in Nevada approved the filing Jan. 11.
A combination of a depleted war chest -- from a massive 1997 remodeling and loss of market share among the casino's core supporters -- and the economic events of last year, led to the bankruptcy.
'The main thing was, for several years we flew in customers from all over the country,' said State Line CEO Michael Devine.
'Our tried and true Utah loyalists couldn't get a room in our place anymore. Then we compounded the problem by doing a construction project that alienated the rest of our customers. We had no Utah customers staying in our hotels for years.'
Devine was hired in 1998, just before the completion of the expansion, which he said increased the resort's debt load to beyond what the company could sustain.
But by 2000, loosened slot machines and table games helped to double cash flow at the debt-laden resort. Too little, too late.
'We figured we were out of the woods,' Devine said. 'But when 2001 came around -- it was bad before Sept. 11, but it was just a disaster after that.'
Chapter 11 bankruptcy, sometimes called 'reorganization bankruptcy,' allows a company to stay in business while restructuring debts.
Devine said he expects the reorganization protections to allow the resorts to make improvements to the properties and update equipment.
The State Line is the oldest casino in Wendover, about a two-hour drive west of Salt Lake City on the Utah-Nevada border.
Devine said the company has about 1,100 employees between the two properties which sit on opposite sides of Wendover Boulevard, connected by a skybridge.
The properties are owned by the descendants of William Smith, who opened a service station in 1926 on the property. Smith opened the State Line in 1933, two years after gambling was legalized in the Silver State.
